147 candidates of the Graduate School of Bulacan State University (BulSU) marched for graduation in the Commencement Exercises held this May 23, 2009 in the BulSU Gymnasium, Valencia Hall.

The event started at exactly 9 o’clock in the morning led by the ROTC Cadets, Candidates for Graduation, and Members of the University Faculty, University Officials, Board of Regents, Guest Speakers and the University President. Dr. Rosalinda L. Joson, Director of the Admissions Office conducted the Invocation followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the BulSU Symphonic Band as well as the BulSU Hymn sang by Dr. Herminio M. Suarez. Presentation of Graduates was initiated by Dr. Norma C. Morala, Dean of the Graduate School and Dr. Alex Lee, Registrar & Director for International Programs while Dr. Mariano C. de Jesus, University President seized the conferment of degree and the introduction of the commencement speaker.

Dr. Rolando L. Magno, the guest speaker, is the Division Schools Superintendent of the City of Malolos who is connected with various public and private institutions in the country. He delivered a speech through the telling of a story about a handsome painter who is in search with a model to areas where there are crowds of people, but in the end found a dust-covered statue of an angel in the basement of a department store. He then paid for it at the cashier and brought it home to remove the dust and paint it. According to him, what individuals get from the undergraduate courses is not yet enough, so they must move on and just like the statue of the angel, be removed of its dust and be painted anew. Graduates are the newly painted statue, the brush represents the BulSU, and the strands of the brush represents the professors, instructors, officials and the teaching personnel.

“Now is the time to rejoice”, said Dr. Magno, as he congratulates the graduates. Also, he sang “Never walk alone” as a dedication to the graduates. After his speech, a Plaque of Recognition was awarded to him.

Imposition of Hoods and Distribution of Diplomas was headed by Dr. Mariano de Jesus assisted by Dr. Danilo Faustino, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Norma Morala, and Dr. Alex Lee. Pledge of Loyalty to the Alma Mater was led by Mr. Arnel F. Mendoza, DPA while Dr. Rolando R. Gaspar, President of the BulSU Alumni Association, Inc. administered the Pledge of Loyalty to the Alumni Association.
The said commencement exercises became a milestone, as the CICT Family witnessed Prof. Fausto S. Hilario, Dean of the College of Information and Communications Technology, acquire his Doctor’s Degree together with his beloved wife Mrs. Rosita D. Hilario acquisition of Master’s Degree.

Sanitarium - an establishment for the treatment of the invalids and the convalescents. After his usual visit there, he’ll go home trembling from his Father’s damn medication. He will hop in his bicycle and race with the wind down the town. His barren black hair race through the night breeze, coated peanuts were his post before sunrise. The pieces of peeled peanuts cooked with the sweetest powder ever invented here on earth. For four in the morning, he will finish the packaging from last night’s. His aged mother, staggering from the coldness of their open dwelling, would rise from her bed to help her son. A cup of warm coffee would keep them from the coldness for several minutes. After, he will go to the publisher to get some newspaper to sell in the vicinity of the market. This is how his day begins.

June and enrollment was his family’s usual dilemma. The only technique he shared to me was the class-card-replacement-method. He calls it that way. He would pass index cards to his instructors as a sign of his willingness to still prolong in the class but he is not yet officially enrolled because of balances. This only has effect during 2nd semester enrollment. June is really the toughest month in the year for them (Mostly, for us students and our parents). He pays for the development of the unknown. He couldn’t even just identify where it goes. So the whole, two months before the month of June, he took summer job to earn another penny-horrible semester in the roller coaster ride. I saw him so many times at the market sidewalk, sometimes before the optical clinic. Often, when I go to church his visual basic 6.0 starts at 10 o’clock in the morning. Three hours before his first period start; he would sell newspapers (sometimes wearing his uniform, one time, I saw him wearing his I.D.). His pale shirt turning into milk and his faded pants generalizing the facade of old usage, his shoes started to retire from housing his feet to walk but he’s still unhesitant to get a new pair. This causes him to get no self-confidence at all. I heard he wanted to join a student organization of the College but fell back not to when he learned about the membership fee which was good enough for his four day transportation allowance. Also Friday suffering gets him no good. The only vacant hour he has is lunch break and this brought him helpless feelings, for his budget could only suit his jeepney fair and for unexpected photocopies. This made him thought about the books they bought because of requirements. Do these books really are reliable, then why do they still intend for photocopied handouts? At the fifth floor, his sweats paler from climbing the stairs. During my Algebra class, he’s just another blackboard away. See how ceiling fans hang strained from circulation: ceiling fans only for display. A mass of these books would scale equal to his livelihood cost. One module is worth large kilos of nuts and newspapers only to read typo errors. His hands were shaking from hunger and heat but still focusing on the prof’s lecture dictation because they couldn’t find enough information from the book. He complains about his circuit studies. Moreover, he complains about the price of the Logic Trainer and the point pens he uses at the drawing class.

I heard he wants to be “someone” someday. That’s why he undergoes computer studies to be taught to be innovative individual. That’s why he wants to be trained in the working ground with massive advancement in technology. That’s why he wants to be given concrete standards of computer knowledge in his filed of specialization. You sought us, students, by these principles because you should establish something in our lives in the future.

That’s the bitter side of the reality. Let’s face it.

I saw light in his eyes. I saw hope in what he pursue. I saw myself and other faces of aspiring web developers, computer analysts, database workers, research technicians, and programmers, in the shadows of his features at the fifth floor- we are there. We are in a vast classroom dictated by one professor. We are hungry, we are shaking. Above us, were strained ceiling fans that supposed to be blowing out winds of knowledge so we could breathe and in order for us to have a spark of hope of becoming professionals someday? His features from the market with his uniform and his identity scream out to buy his newspaper. We all scream out to be heard in this newspaper.

Someday, according to him, when he finally become a programmer and succeeded from all the oppression of life and formal learning, he will not sell newspapers anymore.

Why do some people believe that there is no such thing as a happy family? It is a belief in this world that we are not perfect beings, and no one can be perfect. That’s why almost all of us choose to use this belief every time we made mistakes. But in reality, we try to be as close to the ideal “happy family,” which sometimes I don’t know what that is.

Every time people asked me about my family, I usually answer them that it is too personal to share, and there is a reason why it is called personal. This is one of the reasons why, at first, I am uncomfortable to discuss this topic. But now, I’m ready to let them know my story and I hope it will serve as an inspiration to everyone.

There have been some families from time to time that I've met who I thought were good and happy, and I assumed that they were the happiest family alive. At this moment I accept the truth that I’m wrong. There are some things I don’t see behind closed doors. And I don’t even know what other people are going through. If your family is happy then good for you, but don't tell me that there was never any problem in your family. Not even a little one…because everyone has problems of their own. That’s why there was a time that I believed that there is no such thing as a happy family… that all families have some problems in them. Like for instance, there was a time that my family encountered a problem with money, and almost everyday my parents had an argument with each other, and I feel so miserable at that time. My mother feels so unhappy about this thing. She always cry when my father acts like this to her. I worry about her. I want to share sorrow with my mother but I don't have enough bravery to comfort her. I just keep it in my mind… I believe this is a problem that is needed to get resolved by grownups... Until such time that I tried to muster up some bravery and comfort her. I talked to her and most importantly, I listened to what she has to say, because I know that she needs to be able to get out everything she's feeling. I also talked to my father and we both agreed to solve the problem. I told him that I loved them both and it hurts me every time they’re fighting and arguing. I cannot explain the feeling when we already solved the problem; I did my part in keeping the peace in our family.

And now, I’m very proud to say that I come from a very happy family. I get on with all my sisters, brothers and parents. We usually go on family outings together. My sisters and brothers are my best friends and so are my parents. I would pick family over friends any day. Friends come and go, but family stays forever.

People are human and make mistakes in life. Sometimes we take our families for granted, and take out our frustrations on them. Parents can sometimes be mean. Brothers and sisters fight. Life is just that way, there is nothing we can do about it. My question is: “Why do some people believe that there is no such thing as a happy family?” I think it is because of their definition of happiness. Some people believe that being happy means no problems or troubles of any kind, so any family with problems cannot be a happy family. However, I still believe that happy families are usually the ones that come through tough times together. Now, I can say that I come from a very happy family, we encountered problems but problems keep us strong.

You want to be happy? Then count your blessings and be grateful for what you get instead of resenting what someone else gets. For me, selfish and jealous people never come from a happy family. Such people usually are never happy about anything, because they're always comparing with what someone else has. I know people who are dirty poor and yet smiling, and there are other friends of mine who are loaded with money but are still unhappy. Money isn't all about happiness but it does help achieve a certain peace of mind if you don't have to worry about the basic necessities of life. There are lots of sources of happiness. The happiest families are those that have loving, supportive and positive relationships with each and that is something that no money can buy.

There are happy families who are poor.
There are unhappy families who are rich.
There are happy families who are rich also.
There are unhappy families who are poor also.

Once, we were just strangers who happened to meet almost everyday but with names remain unknown to each other;

Once, we were just schoolmates who happened to bump each other in times we cannot remember;

Once, we were just typical students with different cluster of friends, different hang-outs and trips;

Once, we were just walking ideas without direction, ink without containers, and acquaintances without concerns…

Oooopss! But that happened more than a year ago…

I still have the SMS (dated 07/28/07) Sir Kevin sent to confirm my qualifications for the CURSOR membership. Like the others, I do not know what’s in store ahead of us…without formal training and knowledge in journalism?--We all step up to the challenge and take the risks!

With hindsight, I remember the time we were rebuilding the student publication. Hurdles never seem to get enough of us. But the lesson behind our every jump over humps is that, we made not only an established student paper but at the same time – a bond of friendship where the team spirit comes more alive.

… And after the graduation of batch 2008, where most of the Section Editors took different paths to trace their career goals…who would have thought that a CURSOR Reunion is possible? Well, Sir Kevin, Ma’am Aiza and Ma’am Jane do!

February 21, 2009, Sir Kevin (the ever generous CURSOR co-Adviser, in their ever welcoming home =>) hosted the CURSOR Night, which is somehow like a trilogy film of the past, the present and the future. Why? Because almost everyone who has been a part of the group was present, the incumbent Editorial Board, and the CURSOR Correspondents (who will soon may or may not become a part of the publication). Aside from occasional get-together, which happens once or more every year, the three advisers collaborated their ideas to make a grand reunion night possible and worth remembering.

During the Night, we spend much of the time reminiscing the days when most of them were still students, telling what they miss about college and about the university, talking about anything like we haven’t been away from each other, and taking a lot of pictures. Before, most were still scared of what the world will offer them, but now they are beginning to become successful and professionals in their own manner.

Aside from all the fun, this night has also been a Planning Night for CURSOR. A lot of things have been discussed for further improvements of the publication. The most important in the queue of plans is the widening of CURSOR’s horizons through the establishment of the CURSOR Alumni Association.
Cited in the “Minutes of the Meeting for the CURSOR General Assembly on 21 February 2009”, the CURSOR Alumni will be an association of CURSOR’s graduated members with the primary goal of sustaining the teamwork and express support to the incumbent set of the publication’s Editorial Board and staff. The association upon official establishment is recommended to conduct an annual general assembly. Suggestions regarding this concern are further elaborated below:

     1. A set of officers will be elected every year. The said set of officers will be the one to organize the annual general assembly.

     2. A social network is encouraged to maintain the communication line. This may be ensured through an online account of CURSOR Alumni in Friendster, Multiply, or Facebook.

We may be in different places, but the constant thread of unknown communications keeps us bonded. Well, I am not going to elaborate things, but this night is indeed one of my most memorable moments with my CURSOR family… (Thanks Aiza for stealing the candle! Isinama mo pa ‘yung lalagyan! =>)

Soon, I will be officially out of the CURSOR after the graduation, but I know that I don’t need to worry about the Separation Anxiety, because wherever I may be, CURSOR will be a constant print in my life… and hey! I am looking forward for our next grand reunion!!!

“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life, sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and …heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”

A: AE, Wake up, we’ve got to have our journey today!

AE opened his eyes and speak in a dreamy voice.

AE: Journey to the top of Mt. Everest?
A: No, greater than that!
AE: (Puzzled)
A: Journey to the past!
AE: What shall we use, Time Machine or Pensive? Hahaha..
A: I’m serious.
AE: Yes, you are. Now what?
A: We shall bring back the memories of the past…
AE: Oh, I’ll bet I heard something like that before in the radi-Ohhh Whoah!

A strong twister-like force has gotten both of them and brought them in an old infrastructure where ICE rooms are formerly located. They walked in the corridor and sat on the metal bench in front of the faculty.

A: I can still remember my first day as a College student.
AE: I can still remember your face that day. You’re like an innocent teenager who knows nothing about college life...
A: What I only knew that time is, college is more serious and harder than high school life and it could be my last stage of studying.
AE: And you realize that it couldn’t be your last stage, right?
A: (In a dreamy tone..) So many dreams, so many learned lessons to ponder…
AE: By the way, what made you decide to take BSIT?
A: I am very confused that time just like other HS graduates. After I graduated in HS, I realized that I love art. But they say if I’ll take fine arts, I will have no future on it.
AE: How about MassCom? I heard you are good on planning act scenes and designing props when you were in HS.
A: Oh, I’m not talented in being loquacious, ha-ha..
AE: So why did you choose IT?
A: My father pointed at the BSU catalog and I was enlightened to see what he is pointing out---BS Information Technology. It sounds great to my ear…
AE: That’s all?
A: I know it’s God’s will that He had me placed in this course. I am always praying in all my plans. That’s why I don’t regret that I became an IT student.
AE: Did you find it joyful when you started out your life as an IT student?
A: Life as an IT student did not become as easy as that, but as a freshman student that time, taking two majors and several minor subjects, studying at first couldn’t be hard to do.
AE: Hey, I heard that programming isn’t your favorite one. What makes it true?
A: Ha-ha.. Programming? I never hated programming, but it hates me! aw!
AE: Is it true that it depends on the teacher on how the student will learn the subject?
A: For most students, yes! Because most students are depending on their instructors. That’s why they must be thankful if their instructors are diligently teaching them with proper knowledge.
AE: Seems you have complaints with some instructors?

He looks at her with a catching look.

A: It’s inevitable. Not all college instructors can teach well even in prestigious schools. That’s why students need to strive harder and it’s a challenge for them to face, because not all learning can be learned in school.
AE: Right. Care to tell me some highlights of your college days?

A stood up and went in front of Valencia Hall.

A: Hey come over here!
A: This gym has so many memories to me…
AE: Yeah, the acquaintance party. The unforgettable night because it was your first time. It’s really a loud night with hard rock and songs from ICE band and overnight dances.
A: But my friends and I just became wallpapers at the bleacher. Ha-ha.
AE: (Smile) So how did you become totally different as an IT student?
A: Firstly, schedules. I can still remember my first year and second year days that I have long vacant time between subjects. In those free times, I find so many students using those times idle, chatting all around, roaming, and eating.
AE: Maybe they were just resting.
A: I don’t say they were wrong, but those times are too much for resting. Those precious times should be put to good use.
AE: Then what do you do?
A: Well, I admit, at first I use those times. I go with my friends in computer shop wherein I explore the use of Yahoo! Messenger, chat and friendster. I can still remember the time when I make friends with a black American that I had defeated in Yahoo! Chess game. It’s fun having American friends, you’ll practice English well.
AE: But I guess, they weren’t a waste of time. You try to explore things that aren’t familiar with you and I know you wouldn’t cross lines.
A: ‘Course. There should be time for everything. I learned it from Rizal, he’s not comfortable in using his time idle. He didn’t let time pass by doing nothing. You know by that time, I started to explore things, particularly gadgets. I enjoy exploring capabilities of my N6650 that time.
AE: Ah, the crazy rounded-keypad phone! Nah.. so what did you do?
A: Yes, and that is the start of my interest in exploring gadgets.
AE: So what made you inspired in exploring gadgets?
A: I don’t know. I think I am just happy applying something I learned in our computer subjects. Exploring its system folders. Experimenting with various mobile applications become my leisure then. I am exploring all the things I can do with it until I realize its limitations. One is, it cannot multitask. You cannot listen to the music while texting.
AE: Kinda easy job. So what’s your point?
A: My point is.. you’ve got to try something new out of your gadget. I don’t say you should overuse it but I say, you should be witty in discovering something new and be smart in putting it to good use. If you discovered its limitation then you should be responsible in taking care of your gadget to extend its lifespan.
AE: Oh it’s good. And by means of exploring their capabilities, you could make good use of what you had paid for.
A: Not only that. You could save money by having knowledge even on those simple things.
AE: Ah, smart! Kinda…. Just like downloading trial version softwares…
A: And?
AE: And put them to good use by downloading cracks!
A: Quality Consciousness, Process and Habits taught us that that practice is illegal! It’s against Intellectual Property Rights.
AE: Huh? But what if you’ll need Photoshop and Dreamweaver in web development? They’re too expensive. Each costs as much as Php5,000.00.
A: That’s why sourceforge.net and many others developed open source software just like Gimp --- Photoshop equivalent, and Kompozer--- Dreamweaver equivalent.
AE: But those open source softwares aren’t that flexible to handle than commercial one. I believe they should be used for commercial purposes only but for self-use, you can do the “smart way”?
A: You wouldn’t quit. That’s why developers and programmers’ pocket get ‘hurt’. ..
AE: Oh, I don’t think so. Hey, I heard you recently hacked your PSP?
A: No, no, who told you? I have never tried hacking that thing. It’s too complicated you know. You may brick or damage that thing if you have done mistakes in upgrading its Custom Firmware.
AE: Oh yeah, It’s full of twists. But if you have done it right then you could save money, and you could make it a business.
A: Hold your breath, businessman… It’s not that easy. You need to learn more on PSP-Hacks. CFW isn’t illegal in our country, that’s why we could take advantage of cheap games than UMD ones. And I think, this vacation, I should study those things.
AE: Cool! And you told me, you will also study more about Multimedia. By the way, why are you so informed of these things? What makes you?
A: Oh, to learn about new things, my favorite activity when I am online is lodging in forums, especially in my 3rd home, Convergence Forums. If you get in there, you wouldn’t be left behind in technology, whether in software, hardware, programming, networking or database technology. They have updated talks and conversations about new trends in technology. That’s not all, you could get help in your tech problems by joining techy forums. I got help many times in consulting my techy problems with my forum mates. Internet really gives a lot of knowledge, so much that you couldn’t put them all in your brain.
AE: That’s why you become familiar with CSS in your friendster account that makes you edit CSS coding and rub out the unnecessary advertisements on your media box.
A: Oh, if you are in web designing, you should learn CSS. It greatly helps you in creating outstanding web designs.
AE: Hmmm… How about the CICT professors highlight?
A: Oh, I can only recall those remarkable ones.
AE: Oh yeah, how significant have they become to you?
A: I’ll first state the criteria in judging the CICT’s top teacher in our batch.
AE: Yes, it’s necessary as they could be a model to others. So the criteria are---?
A: (1) Disciplinary
    (2) Dedication
    (3) Motivation
    (4) Skillful
AE: And they are---?
A: Here’s the first one. She became our teacher in basic programming. If she’s the teacher, you shouldn’t miss every discussion. ‘Cause in every meeting, there’s new knowledge to gain. And even if programming isn’t fun for most of us, we have the guts to study it eagerly.
AE: Really? Proof?
A: I got 100% on our actual exam. :) And there’s more, you’ll find in her the disciplinary as she also has the close-door policy, that’s why if you’re still coming from Capitol and it’s already 7:10, you’ve got to run or ruin your day in not attending in her class.
AE: Really amazing huh? Who else?
A: He became our teacher in DataCom and Networking. Others had met him in Presentation Skills. He’s another remarkable professor we’ve met. We’ve learned a lot from him. In his class, I’ve learned that I could open my desktop CPU without ruining its inside components. Because of that, I’ve learned not to bring my heavy CPU in stores whenever I’m upgrading components. We’ve learned basic pc troubleshooting, hardware and software and it helps me save pesos from being spent in repair shops.
AE: I heard he’s the only instructor in there that instructs students to hand write their assignments. Isn’t it absurd? You’re IT and –
A: And we aren’t allowed to computerize it?
AE: Well… yeah? Why?
A: I’ll say it’s effective because we learn it while we write it. I never say it’s a good technique but for him, it has become.
AE: He taught us Networking. That is one. We learned so much because we’re always on actual and it’s much effective than pure lecture and class discussion. It’s easy to understand and remember because we’re doing it ourselves.
AE: Wow! Networking is one of the in-demand skills in IT companies and one of the high-paying jobs.
A: Yep.
AE: What else are your unforgettable learnings in here?
A: The Complex SAD.
AE: What?
A: The complicated Systems Analysis and Design.
AE: So it’s sad anyway huh?
A: Not really. I’m thankful we’re under one of the best SAD teachers. The study goes not too much complicated. We experience creating DFDs, HIPO, and after creating and revising all the system planning, we proceed in creating the system. Although it is not thoroughly successful, we’ve learned so many things in developing a system.
AE: And speaking of system development, I heard you were also taught Project Management in order to come up with a successful project.
A: Yep. It’s SRM (System Resource Management). We’ve learned that IT projects are really complicated and cost millions of dollars. And I got shocked to know that there are very few IT projects that became successful and the rest are wasted and go in nothing.
AE: Oh, that is how meticulous IT projects were.
A: And before executing an IT project, it will go through several knowledge areas that the project manager follows so that the company will know if the project is worth continuing or not.
AE: Yah, it’s not easy to waste millions of dollars.
A: But like the project manager I had interviewed, he always say, “There’s always opportunity to every problem.” And I couldn’t forget his favorite quotation: “I do not have special talents, nor special skills and trainings, just passionately curious. –quoted from Albert Einstein”. He said that the basis of good work is very good experience, followed by talents, details oriented, persistence.
AE: And that’s all?
A: And I couldn’t forget that Dean became our remarkable professor that disciplined and trained to become better professionals someday. He taught us so many things. Some are from his own experiences.
AE: Like?
A: Like teaching us that poverty is not a hindrance to success because Dean came from a simple life but look at him now, highly respected in the University.
AE: And it inspires the students to strive harder to attain their goals and be successful in their fields of endeavor.
A: Right!
AE: What else are your remarkable memories here?

     Scene becomes dramatically calm…

A: Here in college, I saw different faces of life, of people and their ways. In college life, I learned to mingle with different kind of people. I learned to become friends with them. I become more extrovert here than in my high school life. I’m one of those people that are happier with college than in HS life. One of the things that I wouldn’t forget here is that I met a friend that is best among the rest, and a bundle of friends that will surely leave good memories in me.
AE: For sure, they will never just become memories. They’re all wonderful experiences that strengthen your soul and spirit in continuing life.
AE: Hey wait… so how could IT make human an Android?
A: Android means, human that can do things that more than a human can do, as to a powerful robot. Superhuman, others say.
If human could hold technology in his hand and use it almost perfectly then he could witness its power in his hand as he could discover and do something new in technology. He could develop things more and maybe do the first flying house. Or be the first one to create an electronic mind reader that can read exactly one’s mind without asking them any questions.
AE: Yeah? Wondering if they could be possible… And that’s the crux. :)
